Reaching Out Across Colorado: Summer 2009

The Colorado Mining Association (CMA) Mining Matters/Rocks on Your Face outreach program was in full swing this summer; with CMA or industry members participating in events and festivals ranging from the Denver area to Colorado’s far western slope. Some of the events and festivals that CMA has participated in include:

- Arvada Gold Strike Festival: Arvada, CO
- Donkey Derby Days: Cripple Creek, CO
- Buffalo Bills Days: Golden, CO
- Freemont County, Fiddlers Along the Arkansas
- Olathe Sweet Corn Festival: Olathe, CO
- Littleton Western Welcome Week: Littleton, CO
- Gunnison Rodeo/Cattlemen's Days: Gunnison, CO
- Steamboat Springs Art in the Park: Steamboat Springs, CO

In addition to the Colorado events, CMA participated in the CleanTech Expo in Washington D.C., thanks to a generous sponsorship by AngloGold Ashanti North America Inc. The display emphasized the link between the new energy economy and mining and the many uses of minerals in renewable power systems.

At each event, the objective is to promote Mining Matters, an outreach program developed by CMA focusing on the impact of mining in your daily life . The booth contains three display cases demonstrating the importance of mining to Colorado. Two display cases have examples of minerals and products that contain them. The third illustrates the connection between minerals and the development of renewable power systems; emphasizing the importance of mining in the new energy economy.

In addition to the booth, CMA also distributed over 2,000 information packets, which included coloring books, the Rocks on Your Face and Mining in Colorado brochures, the Colorado Reader (150 years of gold mining in Colorado), and coal with coal garden recipes. CMA distributed nearly 1,000 lunch cooler bags to those willing to complete a survey on the displays.

The public was very receptive to the local professionals in the mining industry who took time to speak with the attendees. The main comment we received? "I had no idea!" CMA thanks the wonderful volunteers who helped make these events possible.
